BOOKS FOR THE CANADIAN NORTH
Is a project undertaken by the Women’s Canadian Club of Winnipeg . A small group of volunteers has collected books from members of the club, from schools, from garage sales and their own homes. Meeting each week, the volunteers select books suitable for children who are learning English and for other community members in Arviat, Whale Cove, Baker Lake and Repulse Bay. Nunavut.
Scott-Bathgate Ltd. has donated space in the Nutty Club building on Pioneer Avenue where the books are sorted and stored by the volunteers. Since the inception of this project, Calm Air has flown over 17,000 books from Winnipeg directly to Arviat, Baker Lake, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bat and Chesterfield Inlet.
Other books have been sent in containers by truck from Winnipeg to The Pas, by train from The Pas to Churchill, and by barge from Churchill to Arviat.
